The controversial photo spread of Miley Cyrus (aka Hannah Montana) in Vanity Fair has been causing quite a commotion in the media. The 15-year-old hit the headlines at the beginning of May after provocative photos of her wearing little more than a white satin sheet during a Vanity Fair magazine shoot were leaked online. The “topless” shot was deemed offensive and Cyrus became a target of family groups who felt she was becoming a bad role model and was too young to make such an overtly sexy statement.
“I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about,” she said in a statement regarding the provocative photo spread shot by famed photographer Annie Liebovitz.
Vanity Fair defended the shoot, reminding people that the young actress’s father also posed in the session. Vanity Fair said through a spokesperson, “Miley’s parents and/or minders were on the set all day. Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley.”
“I’m sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted,” Leibovitz said in a statement released by Vanity Fair.
The Disney Channel is also standing up for its beloved starlet, telling E! News “a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines.”
Miley Cyrus thanked her fans for their support at the KIIS-FM’s 10th Wango Tango music festival for their ongoing support and it seems that Miley will be able to get through this controversy, with her reputation intact.
Miley has been undergoing a seatbelt controversy which happened after she starred in her movie with her and her father not wearing a seatbelt in the car. Miley and Billy Ray both apologized for sending out the wrong messages to fans, and they both say that not wearing a seatbelt is very dangerous. Billy Ray Cyrus was even quoted to say: “We got caught up in the moment of filming, and we made a mistake and forgot to buckle our seatbelts. Seatbelt safety is extremely important.”
